aye I like Nigel's idea that when the priest uses a power he should some how have to suffer some form of "pain"..

The prist has the ability to bring pain to any he touches. This is done by rolling upto 1d4 per odd level of the priest. The priest then takes half the number of HP he causes to the target. the priest must make a successful melee attack against the targets AC taking into account only dex and magical adjustments. THis can be done any number of times per day until all the allowed d4 have been used. This means thaaat at 1st-level the peist can deal his pain tough once only, at third level he could deal 1d4 twice per day or 2d4 tot he same target once, etc...

Not to sound insulting but I included that if a priest of Jandor does not cause pain to a living thing once a day he looses all spells and powers for the following day. Pain would be paintouch or damage. Pain doesnt mean damage my friends just physical discomfort for example a papercut hurts like hell but does it really harm the person?

I like both the Paintouch idea and the Inflict Pain to memorize idea.

Perhaps a part of the memorization process includes inflicting pain upon another? The higher level spells could require a more sentient target.

For example, 1st/2nd level spells might just require pulling the wings off of a fly.

3rd/4th level spells would require breaking a bird's legs, perhaps, or maybe digging out the eyes of a lizard, or skinning a frog alive.

Yuck, this is getting horrible.

5th/6th level spells might require a dog or cat or larger animal, capable of taking much more pain.

7th level could require a sentient being, like a goblin/orc/human.

Yeah, that crosses the line with Jandor. Let's not outrage the PTA totally yet, okay?

I know. Sad Sorry. How about:

1st/2nd level:
Requires an insect or higher life form.

3rd/4th level:
Requires a bird, frog, or higher life form.

5th/6th level:
Requires a dog, cat, or higher life form.

7th level:
Requires a sentient, usually bipedal life form.

How about we avoid dictating the course of worship entirely?

Nigel has a good idea, but it's a roleplaying idea that should be developed by a PC and his DM, not by the Religion Committee. Honestly, this is not an area we need to be delving into, this is definately not "Family Friendly" AD&D here. I'd much prefer to see it hinted to in the description of the dogma than mandated by us on these boards.

The only problem I see with Nigel's Idea is I can not think of another instance where the granted power actually hinders the priest in such a direct way. Now while it is a decent idea I believe the pain touch is quite a simple granted power that falls into worship quite easily. As for other granted powers...

Well I was throwing a spell list togather just for the hell of it. So here we go.
*- Reverse Included
#- Stipulation on spell

1st:
Curse
Command
CLW*
Detect Evil*
Detect Magic
Detect Poison
Darkness
Magic Stone
Cause Fear

2nd:
Aid
Augury
Chant
Fire Trap
Badberry
Heal Metal*
Hold Person
Silence 15'
Slow Poison
Wyvern Watch

3rd:
Continual Darkness
Cause Blindness or Deafness
Cure Disease* #1
Dispel Magic
Glyph of Warding
Prayer
Bestowe Curse

4th:
Cloak of Fear
Cure Serious Wounds*
Divination
Neutralize Poison

5th:
Cause Critical Wounds
Flamestrike
Insect Plague
Wall of Fire

6th:
Blade Barrier
Wall of Thorns
Word of Recall

7th:
Unholy Word
Symbol #2

#1- May only cause debilitating diseases
#2- Only Symbol allowed is that of Pain

Justifications:
You may notice that a goodly number of healing spells have been included. This does not mean the priest should or would use them or memmorize them. One of the primary reason Jandorites exsist is to cause pain and harming a corpse is pretty damn near impossible. Jandorites in an odd way would guard lives in my opinion. Thus they have some access to slightly potent healing spells to prevent uneeded loss of life.

Spells in list above I feel should be removed or justified.

1st:
Darkness
Cause Fear

2nd:
Aid
Fire Trap
Silence 15'

3rd:
Continual Darkness

4th:
Cloak of Fear
Neutralize Poison

5th:
Flamestrike

In general any spell that can caue damage or aid or add to the ability to casue damage could be said to help in spreading pain but I think some better rationalization than that should be used.

I agree with the needing of healing if not to preserve life at least to be able to further the cause of pain through returning helth in order to do more before ulitinmate death. Without ever actually doing any damge personally the helaing could casue pain in the efect of keeping alive a person as they become more and more emasiated as they are starved while a prisoner or slowly tortured while being kept alive rather than be allowed to die after repeated psychological attacks of different kinds, etc...

I concur with Kluu, feel free to justify these spells. We just want to see the why's, not just cancel them out. Smiley

Why do I get images of Pinhead and the Cenobites running around Thardferr when I read this?

For scilence well is well I considerd a survivalist spell sometimes you just can torture someone because well they scream and draw attention and well a good jandorite should be able to mask that unfortunate biproduct of their ahh craft Wink. Cause fear and cloak of fear well hmm at time of writing I figured they would be a way to move through a crowd or avoid direct conflict which could result in death. Neutralize poison falls in with that healing magic alot of pain comes from poison and so does ALOT of death.

I can accept all but neutralize poison as that stops pain. Unlike heaing it doesn't allow for more pain to be granted and to prolong the process as much as creates a non pain time. Healing if not complete allows for the pain to remainand then be reinstitued.

Anyway let other decide, Just being picky.
