"The Butcher of Thardferr"

Group - Thursday night "The Daggers of Edilar"

Characters Present: Liriel, Skrot, Majakian, Jelani, Raylen.

Characters Missing: None.

Session Length: 4 hours

Session Date: Thursday, 08/15/02

Game Time: 7/11/731 - 7/17/731 (summer)

Location: In the northwestern DeepWood

Description of the game: Travel along the swamp's edge, base camp in an elven ranger hut.

Summary: The heroes found a force of enemies trailing them, Jelani led the trackers away, and the group established a base

camp in an abandoned elven ranger hut.

Long Version:
The Daggers traveled for a day, and encamped, with Cantrips to prevent the mosquitoes from tormenting them.

During the night, Majakian heard noises, and the heroes assembled in hiding to witness an enemy force passing by about 100

yards to the north, heading east. There were a handful of gnoll sniffers, about 20 goblin skirmishers, 6 hobgoblin archers,

5 ogres, a hill giant, 10 bugbears, about 20 kobolds, and some trailing scouts. After they'd passed by, the heroes decided

that they couldn't risk continuing on their current route toward the waiting enemies.

Jelani took the Findrod and continued along to the northeast, laying down a false trail. The rest of the heroes shrouded

themselves in invisibility and magical flight, and hauled collective hero-butt to the southeast in an attempt to lose the pursuit. They were led by Raylen in owl form, with strangely glowing red eyes. Apparently his God had seen fit to warp him with another gift.

The solitary Jelani set off, and after a few hours he heard voices speaking in some harsh tongue he didn't recognize.

Creeping forward, he nearly stepped on a bugbear scout. Although invisibility cloaked him from the creature's sight, the

bugbear smelled and heard Jelani, but chose to remain still as Jelani made his departure. After a few minutes, Jelani called

flight upon himself and sped away. (OOC: His further adventures were handled on a separate thread, rather than in-Session, and aren't part of this Trip Ticket. I'll write up a side-session Trip Ticket when he's finished, if someone will remind me. *Myth nudges Liriel and Jelani.*)

The other heroes made good time as they circled around to approach the Fortress from the east.

As the party traveled, Raylen led them in the form of a wolf. One afternoon as he loped along ahead of the others, danger descended upon him in the form of a giant eagle. The hungry creature hurtled out of the sky and sank her fierce claws into the unsuspecting Raylen, then attempted to carry him aloft.

Spellfire erupted from Majakian, badly singing the gigantic bird, and Liriel sent an arrow into the creature's chest. As it struggled to carry its prey aloft, Skrot leapt forward and buried his axe in the giant eagle's chest, killing it. The heroes hid the corpse, after Majakian had plucked forth a few feathers and a massive claw.

The heroes eventually discovered an abandoned elven Ranger hut in a tree, and took up residence there. Raylen left to scout, and Majakian set up a board scroll. He found a post sent many days earlier from Purgu, the goblin magus in Magmaville. The post summarized the Hordeland culture in case such information should prove helpful to the heroes. Raylen returned with scouting information, and made plans to set out the following day with Liriel to get a closer, ground-level look at the farms the party intended to assault.

The next day, both Liriel and Raylen were cloaked with Invisibility and the liquid scent-mask from Raylen's magical pot. Raylen took the form of a hippogriff, Liriel mounted, and they set off to explore. A few miles along, they found a newly-built road leading through the Deepwood, and discovered an enemy force traveling westward toward the Fortress...

Casualties:
a Giant Eagle

Treasure gained:
An elven ranger hut to use as a base camp

Information gained:
A group of several dozen enemies, including ogres and a giant, was tracking the group

"The Butcher of Thardferr"

Group - Thursday night "The Daggers of Edilar"

Characters Present: Liriel, Skrot, Majakian, Raylen.

Characters Missing: Jelani.

Session Length: 4 hours

Session Date: Thursday, 08/29/02

Game Time: 7/17/731 - 7/18/731 (summer)

Location: In the northwestern DeepWood

Description of the game: Fully freakin' flaming the Fortress's farmlands, finally!

Summary: Raylen and Liriel were unable to impede the arrival of some reinforcements and supplies and a captive stone giant. The group assaulted the farmlands and burned them to ashes, along with a portion of the Deepwood.

Long Version:
As Raylen and Liriel scouted out the path to the farmlands, they happened across a group of reinforcements, supplies, and a captive stone giant. The enemy forces consisted of a wagon and oxen, two carts with mules, a bound stone giant, hobgoblin archers, goblins, and some wounded bugbears.

Raylen used his divine powers to warp the wood of the wagon's wheel, putting a stop to the caravan. Unfortunately, the wagon was equipped with a spare wheel. Fortunately, it was the wrong size. The giant was unbound long enough to shove the massive wagon aside so that the carts, goblins, and bugbears could journey to the Fortress. One goblin remained with the hobgoblins and the giant, alongside the broken wagon loaded with supplies.

Raylen took the form of a huge cottonmouth snake and kept a wary reptilian eye on the enemy camp, while Liriel waited invisibly. As night fell, the hobgoblins broke out a cask of liquor and shared it around, but remained remarkably free of intoxication. The goblin, however, was allowed... even encouraged... to become wildly intoxicated as an entertainment device. The stone giant curled up and slept, or at least pretended to do so. As the hobgoblins began to bed down for the evening, Raylen resumed his human form and made plans with Liriel.

Raylen became a giant greensnake, and both he and the hidden Liriel crept toward the campsite. Despite several near-detections, the two were able to approach within 30 feet or so of the site, and Raylen's form permitted him to slither up to a sleeping hobgoblin. Raylen bit down, killing the sleeping hobgoblin. The big snake threw a few coils atop the hobgoblin in an attempt to keep his thrashing quiet, and did an admirable job of it. However, the hobgoblin guard was extremely attentive, and noticed the rustling. He caught sight of the greensnake slithering away from the corpse, and sounded a general warning. The hobgoblins, armed and alerted, prepared to hunt down the fleeing reptile, but apparently the leader recalled them. Raylen and Liriel rejoined one another.

The enemy camp, in a heightened state of security, offered little chance for the two to affect it further. The giant moved closer to the hobgoblins, apparently nervous about what was in the forest. Liriel and Raylen decided that further actions were too risky, and returned to the treehouse base, arriving a little after sunrise.

Majakian awoke to let them in, and they found Skrot passed out, nude, in a pool of his own urine and spilled liquor. They bullied the hung-over orc into cleaning up the shelter, which he did in a grumbling fashion. Liriel and Raylen, frustrated and exhausted from a sleepless and nearly fruitless night, went to sleep.

In the evening, the heroes made plans as Raylen mixed a batch of the potion which banishes scent. During the planning, Raylen had several episodes and passed out, but Skrot was able to revive him. Liriel and Skrot bickered angrily during the discussion as well.

Materials were prepared for burning arrows and torches, and Majakian summoned a quantity of oil to assist with both. Armed with the capacity to wreak flaming havoc, the party set out.

The party skirted the encamped hobgoblins and approached the farmlands under cover of darkness. Finding half of the farmlands extending into the Deepwood, the heroes split into two groups of two. Majakian and Liriel formed one unlikely pair, moving to the southwest to approach the un-forested sections of the farmlands. Raylen and Skrot proceeded to the north, covering the area where the open farms meet the forest.

The evening's festivities began when Majakian produced flames and assisted Liriel with lighting her arrows. Liriel began to launch flaming arrows out into the fields as Majakian kept her supplied with flaming arrows.

Raylen began to spellcast, as did Skrot. Raylen summoned five frog-men and forced them to accept flaming torches. As Skrot began to hurl balls of fire out into the fields, Raylen's hench-creatures began to leap across the fields, pausing between jumps to start the crops aflame. Raylen joined Skrot in hurling balls of fire, and between the two of them and Liriel's flaming archery, the farmlands were soon ablaze in multiple places. The heroes split up and fled, with Majakian and Liriel sticking together and bolstered by magical flight and invisibility. Raylen made good his escape as a falcon, and Skrot just ran. The orc didn't feel too strong an urge to evade the raging inferno, however, and spent a few hours surrounded by sheets of flame as the Deepwood endured an autumn forest fire.

Casualties:
A sleeping hobgoblin.
Farmlands, and doubtlessly some of those who tend the crops.
Lots of forest critters.

Mission accomplished!

Session Date: Thursday, 09/04/02

Game Time: 7/19/731 - 09/15/731 (summer-late summer)

Location: In the northwestern DeepWood and back to Magmaville

Description of the game: Regathering after the burning.

Summary: Raylen, Liriel, Majakian, and Skrot rendezvous and head back for Magmaville. Liriel stopped by to pick up the amulet, but decided to leave it safely where it is. The group returned to Magmaville.

Long Version:
Raylen arrived at the hidden base camp rendezvous first. Two days later, Majakian and Liriel joined him. They discussed further options as they waited for Skrot to return. Three days later, he finally showed up.

Once Skrot rejoined them, the group set off through the DeepWood heading for the grove. The others made camp while Liriel headed for the Grove, following the link to the Hearttree that VOOHOOMUNOMONOO created. She and the treant ended up talking the entire night, with the him telling her the tale of the creation of humans and the fall of the sidhe from the ranks of the fey.

The party was then FF'd through the journey back to just east of Magmaville. They met up with a Dwarven scout, evidently in training with the Magmaville Rangers. The dwarf and Skrot almost came to blows before the scout informed them that Magmaville has grown even more orc-unfriendly while they've been gone. Liriel mentioned Merrim and the dwarf ran off to fetch Merrim, hoping to ward off a fight when the party arrives in town.

Merrim met them outside of town with a group of young elven trainees and managed to escort the party to the Goodwine Inn without any blood being shed on either side.

Long Version:
After getting everyone settled and arranging an escort for the orc, Merrim arranged a meeting the next evening with Harmony's Voice (who was in charge in Magmaville at this point due to the absence of both Baron Hammar and Lord Ashenwood.)

The group passed the next day in their own pursuits. Liriel spent time with Darli and sent messages to Sillibys and Verinda. Raylen and Skrot wandered the town in the company of the elven escort, the orc looking for female companionship without success.

The Harmony's Voice joined them at the Inn in the private room and welcomed them, talking with them for a short bit and arranging for some of her clerics to join the Elven Rangers in accompanying Skrot before excusing herself to return to her duties at the Temple.

Description of the game: Meeting with Lord Ashenwood

Long Version:
Jelani came wandering into the town and joined his companions at the Goodwine Inn. Merrrim informed them that Lord Ashenwood had returned to town and wished to see them within the hour. The group adjourned to the private dining room to await Lord Ashenwood's arrival.

The nasty little sprite arrived before Lord Ashenwood, hurled a few insults around and informed them that Flimmergliss's daughter had been born and that the fey were leaving for the west "where the final hope lies". He also commented that Lord Ashenwood had turned away from the fey. He vanished from sight just before Lord Ashenwood arrived.

Lord Ashenwood arrived, accompanied by Tolius and greeted the company. The company spent several hours telling the two of what transpired during their mission. As they were winding down, the sprite reappeared and slung about a few more nasty little barbs and insults before leaving again.

Lord Ashenwood offered them the hospitality of Magmaville for the winter and offered hopes of a return offensive to the fortress in the spring. He offered arrangements with each to claim the second half of their reward for the previous mission.

Group - "The Daggers of Edilar" (Side Session)

Characters Present: Raylen

Characters Missing: None

Session Length: 5 hours

Session Date: 10/01/02

Game Time: 5/20/732 - Huh?(winter)

Location: East of Magmaville.

The session began after Raylen had completed his research, and decided the best chances to find a cockatrice was to head east and start searching. Using his ability to shapeshift, he covered a lot of ground over the next couple of days, and spotted something in the hills south of Yorktown.

Stalking the creture, he saw what appeared to be a creature with the head of a rooster bobbing up in some tall grass on a hillside, apparently eating dinner. Thinking this was his prize, Raylen ambushed the creature and shot it, killing it instantly. Much to his dismay, however, he discovered he had only managed to kill the most dangerous rooster in the world, one that had apparently strayed away from a farm.

After killing the rooster, Raylen moved on searching, without any success. He finally went someplace to rest for the night, and gave a prayer to Praxin just before he went to sleep. Praxin came to Raylen in his dreams, and gave him the clue Raylen needed to find the cockatrice.

After checking out Blood Lake, Raylen made his way to the ruins of Yorktown, and came upon a flock of 5 cockatrices. He summoned some bats to help him distract 4 of the cockatrices, while he drew the 5th away and fought it one on one. After several near calls, he finally downed the cockatrice, and then flew away, wanting the rest of the flock to go away before he risked dipping the wand in the cockatrice's blood. He watched from the sky (in his bird form), until the rest of the flock left, and then came back, dipped the wand in the blood, and rejoiced as he completed the first part of his quest.

XP award: Approx 60 xp/hr/lvl

Treasure: Completeing the first part of his quest with the wand he possesses.

Member of the Daggers of Edilar
Thardferr Date: Sometime over the past winter.

DMed by DM Colgere subbing for DM Myth

Knee Deep in the Dead (so to speak)

Over the winter, while on patrol with various groups of elven rangers in Edilar, Liriel expresses a desire to go visit her friend, the dryad Conisifera, so she can possibly gain more information regarding the Amulet and Terror Vale. Since Conisifera was found near Yorktown the first time Liriel met her, she asks for, and recieves permission to have an elven ranger patrol accompany her.

Everything goes smoothly until the group reaches Yorktown. At Yorktown, the atmosphere is disquieting and haunting. However, the group presses on, and is almost to Conisifera's grove when they are attacked by a large group of zombies and skeletons (16 zombies, 7 skeletons).

Fighting for several minutes, the group manages to down all the skeletons, and a couple of zombies, but one of the rangers falls unconscious, and Liriel and the others decide to make a break for Conisifera's grove, realizing they can move faster than the sluggish zombies.

Bringing the unconscious ranger with them, the group manages to make it to Consisfera's grove, and after some cajoling on Liriel's part, Conisifera agrees to use her powers to heal the female elven ranger. The rangers then all wait just at the edge of the dryad's grove for the next couple of days as Liriel talks to Conisifera about several things.

Conisifera reveals nothing about the Amulet, but does comment about a valley east of the Fortress, saying that there are "big creatures there, some gentle, some violent if bothered, and some that are "as the wolf"". She repeats this several times, and Liriel is unable to get anymore out of Conisisfera about this. Liriel and Conisifera speak for a couple days, and then Liriel and company leave, not encountering any trouble on their way back to Magmaville.

"The Daggers of Edilar" – Reunion

Players in Attendance: Jelani, Liriel, Raylen, Majakian, Zee (None absent)

DMed by DM Colgere, subbing for DM Myth

After the long harsh winter, the Daggers of Edilar met back up at the Goodwine Inn, in Magmaville. Spending awhile discussing their exploits over the winter, the group was joined by Zee, an elf who had been asked by Lord Ashenwood to join them at the inn. Lord Ashenwood then arrived a few moments later and asked the group to meet with him in private.

Once assembled in a private dining room, Ashenwood explained to the group why he had asked all of them to meet him on this day, at the Goodwine Inn. He explained that over the winter, he had consulted with several other leaders in Edilar, and they had come to a conclusion that they needed to learn more about the Amulet the group possessed, in order to see if there was a way to stop the forces at the Fortress. During the meeting, Ashenwood presented a bracelet, one that would supposedly stop the Fortress forces from being able to detect Zee, since he was an elf, and the Fortress forces had shown an uncanny ability to detect elves.

Once the bracelet was given to Zee, Ashenwood told the group their next mission: To find the place known as Terror Vale, and to locate the Fire Gate. Rumor had it that there were some giants trapped behind the gate, and that they knew some things about the Amulet. After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Ashenwood bid the group good luck, and the group made preparations for the journey, leaving the next day. After saying farewell to their friend, Merrim, the group headed east out of Magmaville, on a quest to locate the Fire Gate.

RL Session Date: 10/10/02

PCs in Attendance: Majakian, Liriel, Jelani, Zee (Raylen was absent)

DMed by DM Colgere, subbing for DM Myth

Thardferr Date(s): 05/04/732 to 05/17/732
(Tetranian 4, 732 to Tetranian 17, 732)

The group continued on their journey eastward, towards the Deepwood, in their search for the mysterious Terror Vale, and the Fire Gate that is supposedly hidden there. On the morning of Tetranian 5, as the group was preparing to move on, an 8-legged, 7+ foot long reptilian creature came towards them. One of the party members recognized it to be what is known as a "basilisk", and warned the party of the legends surrounding its abilities. The party decided discretion was the better part of valor, and rode away, before the creature could do any harm.

But in riding away so quickly, the party almost blundered into a hunting party of ogres (12), that had just come out from the long winter, and were on their first spring hunt. The party managed to avoid the ogre party, and the journey to the Ruins of Yorktown Waters went smoothly afterwards.

Upon reaching Yorktown Waters a few days later, the group decided to skirt south of the town, knowing its recent reptuation for problems, and returned to the Death Road, heading east after going around Yorktown. Once the party felt it was far anough away from Yorktown, they decided to camp for the night (day 7 or 8 on the journey, I believe).

The next morning, when they awoke, they were greeted by a patrol of 3 Edilar elven rangers: M'ranthely, Ul'tehtmy and Andaris (he leader of the patrol). Andaris informed the group that they were there to take the horses Lord Ashenwood had lent them back to Magmaville. After a brief conversation, the rangers bid the group farewell, and the group continued on northeastwards, into the Deepwood.

A day or so into the Deepwood, Raylen, scouting ahead in avian form, returned to the party and informed them that a large, lion-like beast he believed was called a manticore was heading their way. The group hid in the nearby woods as the beast flew over, and then continued northeastwards, stopping where the road spilts northwards into the Hordelands, and southeastwards towards Navelorn.

High Points: Watching the group run like little sissies from a harmless basilisk (*wink*).

Low Points: Raylen missing the session.
